The Science Brief
The Science Brief
Hello? Anyone there?
Join us in the Science Briefing room for The Science of Consciousness Part 2! In our third episode we chat with world renowned expert Dr. Adrian Owen, a professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Brain and Mind Institute at University of Western Ontario. We discuss his touching journey working with patients who have sustained brain injuries that result in disorders of consciousness. He showed that functional neuroimaging can reveal conscious awareness in some patients who appear to be entirely vegetative and can even allow some of these individuals to communicate their thoughts and wishes to the outside world. He has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles and chapters and a best-selling popular science book "Into the Gray Zone: A Neuroscientist Explores the Border Between Life and Death". Dr. Owen was recently awarded Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Honors List 2019, for services to scientific research. He has been featured on the BBC documentary "The Mind Reader". Join us to learn more on how his research revolutionized the way we think about these disorders.
